English for Meetings and Negotiations is a functional English course offered to graduate and postgraduate students. The course has been designed for students at the upper intermediate level.
The aim of the course is to:
- Develop awareness of the different components of a meeting
- Improve recognition and construction of arguments and opinions
- Develop awareness of the different stages of a negotiation
- Give practice in listening to and using the specific language
- Increase awareness in cultural differences in meetings and negotiations
Model of English
The language presented in the course is based on a collaborative model of meetings and negotiations in English. Therefore, the language of confrontational tactics is not included, but where appropriate, the language to deal with and manage a confrontation has been included.
As international English has started to dominate the language of meetings and negotiations, the language used is mainly international. Where listening scripts have been used, each speaker brings their own style to the unit introducing some American as well as European English collocations.
